It is also quite useful if the alarm notifications for invalid access are sent through various popular protocols of communications like SYSLOG messages, SNMP traps, text messages, and emails. However, as an ultimate failsafe precaution, the function can include a temporary shutdown of the network access after the alarm is triggered. In such a case, an option should be provided to the administrator, to define the duration of the lockout.

It is also necessary to maintain a log of invalid access attempts. This will provide good amount of data for studying trends, and finding out the number of legitimate attempts that were invalid, and the ones that were perpetrated possibly by hackers. Such log analysis can be carried out on a regular basis, if lot of invalid access activity is seen over a period. This will also prompt administrators to take additional security precautions.

The console server provides out of band access capabilities, which are crucial for managing problems in remote racks of network equipments. Without these capabilities, a lot of time and manpower can be wasted accessing this remote sites. However, the importance of such capabilities should not overshadow the need for proper security, and a multi-layered approach with additional alarms for invalid access is highly effective.

Reduce Difficulties In Your Network With A Console Server

Without the use of a console server, you will experience more difficulties as you create your network.  Every one of your components would need to be wired, and not one of them could be used from a distance.  Also, if a problem occurs, the entire system would shut down before you have the chance to fix it.  Consequently, productivity would diminish since employees would not be able to complete their jobs.  The same situation also applies to factories where machines and workers would become stationary.  With that stated, you should have a good understanding of why you must have a minimum of one conserver inside of your network.



Once a console server becomes installed, you do not require a direct connection to command your network.  Even though the device is made to control the main processor, you still have the choice to start wireless communication.  For instance, if you tried to switch off one of the components in your network rather than manually flipping a button, you can sign onto a Unix server and complete the task from an online connection.  However, do not be mistaken; the security of your network is not compromised just because you want to work remotely.  Like other Internet connections, you cannot begin a session without typing in a password.  Furthermore, the only way you can edit work is from the central connection.  The alternative connections would be read-only.  This means that even though you can see them, you cannot modify the connection without beginning a new session.  Also, being able to view these connections is a progressive step.  It will tell you if there is something that needs work.

Buying a console server comes with two options.  You could either purchase a console server that’s already made or you could create your own.  Most people buy premade conservers since the devices are somewhat affordable.  In addition, premade machines are usually covered by warranty.  If the server fails to work, you can send it back to the manufacturer and receive a new one.  However, if someone is already good at making electronics, creating a custom server may be a good idea.  The creator could use their skills to solve certain problems that might be more difficult with premade servers.  For example, if a company wants to use twenty year old equipment, the connections may not conform to today’s conservers.  A server builder could make a special conserver to fix this situation.  Therefore, it is a task to consider if you or someone you know has that expertise.  Otherwise, buy a conserver that is already made.  If you require something to suit an outdated machine, visit auction sites or dealers as they could have older conservers.
